American Civil War, Battle of Corinth, 1862

Lithograph entitled and captioned: "Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, October 4, 1862. Between Federal Troops under General Grant and the combined Rebel forces under Generals Van Dorn, Price and Lowell. The rebels were utterly defeated and driven from the field, throwing away their arms and accoutrements that could impede their flight." The Second Battle of Corinth, AKA Battle of Corinth, was fought October 3-4, 1862, in Corinth, Mississippi. For the second time in the Iuka-Corinth Campaign, Union Major General William S. Rosecrans defeated a Confederate army, this time one under Major General Earl Van Dorn. On the second day of battle, the Confederates moved forward to meet heavy Union artillery fire, storming Battery Powell and Battery Robinett, where desperate hand-to-hand fighting occurred. A brief incursion into the town of Corinth was repulsed. After a Federal counterattack recaptured Battery Powell, Van Dorn ordered a general retreat. Rosecrans did not pursue immediately and the Confederates escaped destruction.
