POULIE de SMEATON (ingenieur britanique 18eme siecle (1724-1792)) Smeaton's pulley, 1842-1846. Chromolithograph after his own drawing by Henry Champman, showing a pulley designed by mechanical and civil engineer John Smeaton (1724-1792). Smeaton was elected as Fellow of the Royal Society in the 1750s after presenting several papers on instruments and mechanical subjects. In 1756-1759 he built the third Eddystone lighthouse off Plymouth, which became the model for all subsequent rock lighthouses.
