Bamboo Water Wheel,19th Century

Water wheel, Melon Islands. Rural scene in China, showing a bamboo water wheel used for irrigation. The outer rungs on the wheel consist of hollow bamboo shoots that fill with water when immersed in the river and then empty onto the platform at the top. The wheel could raise 300 tons of water every 24 hours. A water wheel is a machine for converting the energy of flowing or falling water into useful forms of power, often in a watermill. A water wheel consists of a wheel with a number of blades or buckets arranged on the outside rim forming the driving surface. Engraving by Henry Adlard after Thomas Allom.
