Mama Huaco is considered by some to be the mother or sister/wife (along with Mama Ocllo) of Manco Capac, the Inca god and legendary first Sapa Inca (Inca Emperor) of the Kingdom of Cuzco. There are several versions of his origin story, which connect him to the foundation of Cuzco. In one myth, Manco Capac was a son of the sun god Inti and Mama Quilla, and brother of Pacha Kamaq. In another, he is the son of Mama Huaco, shown here. The text painted under this image identified this woman as "Mama Huaco Reyana, fue Madre y Muger de Manco Capac." Manco Capac himself was worshipped as a fire and sun God. He ruled the Kingdom of Cuzco for about forty years, establishing a code of laws, and is thought to have abolished human sacrifice. This illustration is from an incomplete series of full-length portraits of Inca rulers by an unidentified maker, probably an indigenous Peruvian or Bolivian artist.
