Etching, Printmaking Technique

In etching, a waxy acid-resist, known as a ground, is applied to a metal plate, most often copper or zinc, and allowed to harden, after which the artist "smokes" the plate. Smoking not only darkens the plate but adds a small amount of wax. Afterwards the artist uses a sharp tool to scratch into the ground, exposing the metal. Color enhanced.
