Prutah of Pontius Pilate, bronze, embossed, bronze, total: diameter: 1.4 cm; depth: 0.1 cm, inscription: Avers: [], Coins, Coinage, Tiberius, Iulian-Claudian Dynasty, Early Imperial Period, Roman Antiquity, The coin units of the Kingdom of Iudaea are referred to as Prutah. The obverse (front) shows a Lituus, the priestly staff of the Augurs. They were the highest Roman college of priests. The circumferential inscription refers to the reign of the emperor Tiberius. On the lapel is a laurel wreath in which the year 18 (Greek: LIH) is inscribed. According to this, the coin was minted in the 18th year of Tiberius' reign, i.e. in the year 31 AD. From 26 to 36 A.D. Pontius Pilate was the procurator of Iudaea. In the name of the emperor he had coins minted, which are called provincial coins. Pilate also passed the death sentence in the trial of Jesus according to Roman law. The imprint of such a coin of Pontius Pilate is said to be found on Jesus' right eye on the famous Turin Shroud.
