Hellgrammite, dobsonfly larva

Hellgrammite, or, Dobsonfly larva, Corydalus sp., on a stream rock. Dobsonfly larvae live underneath rocks in flowing streams with good water quality. Their presence is used, along with other macroinvertebrates that require high dissolved oxygen, as an indicator of a stream's health. They are eaten by fish such as trout and can be used as fish bait in fly fishing.
