Great Auk Drawn From Life, 1655

Only known illustration of a Great Auk drawn from life. This was the pet of Danish physician and natural historian Olaus Wormius a.k.a. Ole Worm (1588-1654). He received it from the Faroe Islands and it was featured in his book Museum Wormianum, 1655. The great auk (Pinguinus impennis) is a species of flightless alcid that became extinct in the mid-19th century. It was the only modern species in the genus Pinguinus.
