A nymphaeum in Olympia, Greece. Artist: Samuel Magal

A nymphaeum in Olympia, Greece. A nymphaeum was a monument consecrated to the nymphs, especially those of springs. This particular nymphaeum was built by Herodes Atticus about AD 160 in memory of his wife Regilla, a priestess of Demeter, and in honor of the Imperial house. Olympia, a sanctuary of ancient Greece, is probably best known for having been the site of the Olympic Games in classical times.
