The composition shows episodes from the lives of Theseus, interspersed amidst a finely drawn, elaborate display of garlands, urns, nymphs, leafy arbors, pavilions and arabesques. From the bottom up the scenes represent: Theseus discovering the sword and sandals of his father, Theseus slaying the Minotaur, Theseus abducting Antiope, and Theseus being rescued by Hercules.
