Suor Maria Celeste, Galileo's Daughter

A nun, traditionally identified as Suor Maria Celeste (1600-1634), daughter of Galileo Galilei. Oil painting by an unidentified painter. Born Virginia Galileo, she was illegitimate and therefore became a nun at the age of 13 because she couldn't marry. For the rest of her life she regularly corresponded with her father, celebrating his achievements and expressing grief at his fate under the inquisition. In all, 124 of her letters survive.
