Central Africa, Bantu Healers and Magicians,19th Century

Fetishmen at Kowedi, on the Banks of the Lovoi, Gabon. The Mitsoghos are the people of the Massifs de Chaillu mountains in the Ngounié province of Gabon. They are a relatively small ethnic group who are revered and feared for their abilities in conjuring spirits from the afterworld, and celebrated magicians and healers. Little is known of tribal life before European contact, but tribal art suggests a rich cultural heritage. A fetish is an object believed to have supernatural powers, or in particular, a human-made object that has power over others. Africa illustrated by William. R. Smith; illustrated by the most eminent artists, 1889 (cropped and cleaned).
