Tutankhamen - Tut Pl. 26 (XXVI) Gold Mask (found by Howard Carter) . Tutankhamen's funeral mask in solid gold, inlaid with semi-precious stones and glass paste. Tukankhamen, by Christiane Desroches Noblecourt, The mask of Tutankhamen's mummy is now a popular icon for Ancient Egypt - the close-up of Tutankhamun's facial features as represented by 18th Dynasty artisans in the young king's death mask. The Egyptologist Howard Carter (employed by Lord Carnarvon) discovered Tutankhamun's tomb (since designated KV62) in The Valley of The Kings on November 4, 1922 near the entrance to the tomb of Ramses VI. Carter contacted his patron, and on 26 November 1922 both men became the first people to enter Tutankhamun's tomb in over 3000 years. After many weeks of careful excavation, on 16 February 1923 Carter opened the inner chamber and first saw the sarcophagus of Tutankhamun. The sarcophagus contained three gold coffins nested within each other. Inside the final one was the mummy of the boy-king, Pharaoh Tutankhamen.. © TopFoto
