Julius Neubronner, Germany Inventor
Neubronner with a pigeon and the miniature camera he invented for aerial photography, 1914. Julius Gustav Neubronner (February 8, 1852 - April 17, 1932) was a German apothecary, inventor, company founder, and a pioneer of amateur photography and film. He patented a miniature pigeon camera activated by a timing mechanism for aerial photography. The invention brought him international notability after he presented it at international expositions in Dresden, Frankfurt and Paris in 1909-11. Spectators could watch the arrival of the camera-equipped carrier pigeons, and the photos were immediately developed and turned into postcards which could be purchased. Initially, the military potential of pigeon photography for aerial reconnaissance appeared attractive, but with the rapid perfection of aviation during the war, military interest in pigeon photography faded and Neubronner abandoned his experiments. Between 1903-20 Neubronner recorded a number of amateur films which were restored by the Deutsches Filmmuseum between 1994-96 and later published on YouTube. He died in 1932 at the age of 80.
