Siderite from Quebec, Canada

Siderite, iron carbonate, is a member of the calcite group of minerals. These are all carbonates with similar crystal structures. While calcite (calcium carbonate) is colorless or white, siderite is brown due to the presence of iron. Siderite is a common mineral in the oxidized zones of ore deposits throughout the world. Excellent rhomb-shaped crystals of siderite can be found in many localities, but one of the most notable is the quarry at Mt. Ste. Hilaire, Quebec, a place that has produced one of the largest number of mineral species of any single locality on earth.
