Squamous Cell Carcinoma

An illustration of squamous cell carcinoma, a skin cancer arising from the uncontrolled division of squamous epithelial cells in the epidermis. Symptoms include the appearance of reddish lesions or raised ulcers that may form a hard, plaque-like surface, and usually develop slowly. Areas which are commonly affected are those which have high or frequent sun exposure, such as the back of the hand, scalp, lip or nose. Treatment usually requires surgery to remove the cancerous areas before they metastasize.
