Surgeon doing cataract surgery using microscope

Microsurgery on eye. A surgeon looks through a microscope suspended over a patient while performing an operation to remove a diseased lens (cataract) from the patient's eye. The microscope gives a magnified view of the eye, allowing the surgeon to use fine syringe needles and delicate instruments or put tiny stitches into the eye's surface. A cataract occurs when the lens of an eye becomes cloudy or opaque, impairing vision. It may occur as a result of the aging process, or it may be congenital (defect at birth), or it may occur due to injury or infection. The cataract is removed and replaced with an artificial, plastic lens.
