Medieval Punishment, Branking

German postcard depicting medieval punishment for a bad woman. A scold's bridle was an instrument of punishment, as a form of torture and public humiliation. The device was an iron muzzle in an iron framework that enclosed the head. Ernest Nister (1841-1906) was a publisher and printer of movable books for children and paper ephemera such as greeting cards, post cards, and calendars. He refined the techniques used in the design of magic windows, dissolving picture, and pop-up books, publishing them from his firm based in Nuremberg, a toy-making center of the 19th century. Reprinting, Nuremberg, 1910.
