M. Gonzales Bravo, 1854. Portrait of Spanish politician Luis González Bravo, who served twice as prime minister of Spain: '...member of the new Spanish corps diplomatique...He was long the editor of a scurrilous publication, called the Guiraguay, which employed the most degrading terms when alluding to the Queen-Mother, who was then not so generally unpopular as she has since become...As President of the Cabinet, he was used as an instrument by the most violent of the reactionists; and, on the occasion of disturbances in one or two of the provinces, placed nearly the whole of Spain under martial law...he has been appointed to the embassy to Constantinople, which is generally regarded, to be less a mark of confidence on the part of Espartero or O'Donnell to Gonzales Bravo, than a means of getting out of the way a person in whom no party can place confidence'.
