The cherry viewing festival or "hanami" is held in Japan between March and early May, depending on when the blossoms open. Hanami was celebrated since the Heian- period in the 8th century. It began as a celebration for the elite of the imperial court but spread to the common citizens during the Edo period. The flowers belong to the sakura cherry tree, which does not bear edible fruit.
