Sculptor whose Bank of England figures were ' criticised ' becomes new ARA . Mr Charles Wheeler , the London sculptor , is among the three new associates elected by the Royal Academy . Mr Wheeler created the giant stone figures , four males and two females , beside the portico of the new Bank of England , and was much criticised when they were unveiled in 1931 .
