Computer image of snow flakes

False color computer enhanced image of snowflakes. Snowflakes exhibit a general six-fold symmetry, dictated by the crystal lattice structure of ice. A 'perfect' snowflake would be a regular hexagon, so these beautiful shapes represent incomplete crystal growth. The variety of shapes obtained through the crystal growth process means that no two identical flakes have been observed. These images were obtained by obtaining aresin cast of the crystals, then creating a digitized image which was enhanced with false colors by a computer.
