Jade pectoral, Olmec, Mexico. Middle Preclassic period (1000-600 BCE. This pectoral was carved by an Olmec artist and reused by the Maya, as shown by the two Maya glyphs on the left side. The edges framing the head indicate that it could also have been part of a larger pectoral. Olmec jade objects have been found throughout Mesoamerica and as far south as Costa Rica. Ethno, 1929.7-12.1.
