The outer layers, the epidermis and dermis, provide a functional gripping surface and contain the nerves that sense tactile information, temperature and pain. Beneath these layers, a thick layer of fat cushions and insulates the rigid skeletal system and provides a soft bed for veins and arteries that nourish the surrounding tissues.
