human finger

Cross-section of the human finger. The finger is made up of many layers of tissue which help to protect the underlying arteries, veins, nerves, and bone. The outer layers, the epidermis and dermis, provide a functional gripping surface and contain the nerves that sense tactile information, temperature and pain. Beneath these layers, a thick layer of fat cushions and insulates the rigid skeletal system and provides a soft bed for veins and arteries that nourish the surrounding tissues.
