Statue of Dr. Isaac Barrow, inaugurated at Trinity College, Cambridge, on Tuesday last, 1858. This fine statue [in white marble]...was presented to the college by the Marquis of Lansdowne..."The name of Dr. Barrow," says the Rev. Mr. Granger, "will be ever illustrious for strength of mind, and a compass of knowledge that did honour to his country. In mathematical learning he was excelled only by one man, and that was his pupil, the great Sir Isaac Newton." He preceded Newton in the mathematical chair at Cambridge...Barrow was, indeed, a profound scholar and energetic writer, whose inquiries were directed to most branches of human learning, yet his chief predilection was for the study of natural philosophy...This bright example of Christian virtue and prodigy of learning died in the 47th year of his age. He was born October, 1630. The statue now raised to his memory has been produced from the most authentic likenesses of him extant, and is ably designed and executed by Mr. Noble, of Bruton-street, Berkeley-square'.
