Execution of the Booth Conspirators, 1865

The hanging of Mary Surratt, David Herold, Lewis Powell, and George Atzerodt who were found guilty of conspiring to kill President Abraham Lincoln by aiding and abetting John Wilkes Booth. The execution took place and the Washington Arsenal Penitentiary on July 7, 1865. Mary Surratt becoming the first woman to be executed by the US Government. Soldiers and civilians can be seen in the foreground.
