Spain, Segovia-Roman Aqueduct

Constructed in the 1st or 2nd century AD, the aqueduct was built to supply water to Segovia. Its total length from its origin in the Guadarrama Mountains is 14,965m, of which 958m are arched (166 arches). At its tallest, the aqueduct reaches a height of 28.5 meters, including a nearly 6 meters of foundation. It is a masterwork of Roman hydraulic engineering made with large blocks of granite aligned without mortar. Water runs in a canal, above, and crosses the old quarter of the city until reaching the Alcazar (Fortress). The aqueduct was declared National Monument in 1884. In 1985 it was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
