Emil von Behring

Emil von Behring (1854-1917). German bacteriologist. Behring obtained his medical degree in 1880 and in 1889 became an assistant at the Institute for Infectious Diseases in Berlin. In 1890 Behring helped to show that immunity from tetanus could be achieved by an injection of blood serum from an infected animal. He believed that an antitoxin of tetanus was present in the blood serum. He later helped to find the same antitoxic immunity with diphtheria, a major killer of children. In 1901 he received the first Nobel Prize awarded in medicine and physiology for his work.
