Peter Pett and the 'Sovereign of the Seas' circa 1645-50, by. Sir Peter Lely (1618-80). Peter Pett holds a pair of dividers, alluding to his status as one of a famous family of ship designers and builders. Peter Pett was responsible for building Charles I's great ship, Sovereign of the Seas. Built at Woolwich in 1637 to the designs of his father, Phineas Pett, she was believed to be the most powerful ship of her day and was the prototype for all 100-gun English first-rates which followed, though the exact number of her guns (100 or more in her original form) remains uncertain.
