Ethiopian-Adal War, 16th Century

"Burning of Chuches by Muslims and the Death of Cristobal de Gama and the Fall and Death of Ahmed Ibrihim al-Ghazi (1506-43) Shot by a Portuguese Musketeer." Wooden panel painted by Kegneketa Jemlieri Hailu of Gondar, circa 1900. Christopher de Gama (1515 - August 29, 1542) was a Portuguese military officer who led the Portuguese army in the crusade waged in Ethiopia, between 1541 and 1543, against the Muslim army of Ahmad ibn Ibrihim al-Ghazi. He merged victorious in four battles against superior forces, but was defeated in the final, after which he was captured and executed. Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi (c. 1506/7 - February 21, 1543) was a Somali Imam and General of Adal who invaded Ethiopia and defeated several Ethiopian emperors. He brought three-quarters of Ethiopia under the power of the Muslim Sultanate during the Ethiopian-Adal War from 1529-43. Imam was killed by a Portuguese musketeer, who was mortally wounded in avenging da Gama's death.
