ALBERT BOBBETT. 'Edmund Cheeseman's Wife Before Governor Berkeley', (1877). William Berkeley, the governor of Virginia (in what is now the United States), attempted to suppress a rebellion by his cousin Nathaniel Bacon in 1676-1677. Here Lydia, the wife of the rebel Edmund Cheeseman, faints as he is condemned for treason by Berkeley. A toothless old woman is restrained from attacking her.
