Owl-Skyphos (Type B), clay, quickly turned, painted (ceramic), alternately fired, clay, painted and fired, Total: Height: 7.5 cm; Muzzle diameter: 10 cm; Base diameter: 5.2 cm, ceramic, Owls, High Classical (Greek antiquity), Greek antiquity, A large number of Attic drinking cups of the 5th century B.C. join together by their decoration to form a special group: the so-called Owl-Skyphos. On both sides of the vessels, a little owl sits quietly with lowered wings between vertically placed olive branches. Owls and olive branches are sacred to Athena, the city goddess of Athens. Both have been decorating the backs of Attic coins since the 6th century BC. Usually the Attic drinking cups have two horizontal handles. In the case of the Owl Skyphoi, a large group is equipped with one horizontal and one vertical handle each. The inscription 'Glaux' on a skyphos in Berlin gave this group its name.
