WWII Female Iron Chippers, 1942

"Chippers." Women war workers of Marinship Corp, 1942. Marinship Corporation was a shipbuilding company of the United States during World War II, created to build the shipping required for the war effort. Founded in 1942, the shipyard built 93 cargo ships and oil tankers, before being wound up in 1945. On a ship, there are many panels that get welded together to form the walls or bulkheads. Where the welder closed up the seams of the panels, there is a bubbled weld line. The iron chipper goes along with a hammer and chisel and chips off the weld excess to make it smooth. One of the most dramatic changes during World War II was the number of women who went to work. As the armed forces filled its ranks with manpower, industry filled its jobs with womanpower. Conditions were sometimes harsh and pay was not always equal, the average man working in a wartime plant was paid $54.65 per week, while women were paid about $31.50.
