BLOODLETTING

The ancient practice of bloodletting. The basic idea was to drain "poisons," or excess blood from the body, thereby restoring the balance of the humors. Different illnesses had to be treated by bleeding from different places. Complex charts showed where the bleeding knife or leeches, which removed blood more slowly than by knife, should be applied.
