Hypatia by Julia Margaret Cameron (British, born India, 1815-1879); 1867; Albumen silver print. Hypatia (c. 350/370 - 415 AD) was the daughter of Theon, a mathematician in Alexandria, Egypt. She became a prominent mathematician, astronomer, and Neoplatonist philosopher and teacher. She made improvements to astronomical instruments and worked on scientific commentaries. She was murdered by a Christian mob.
