A benign condition of the colon due to deposition of melanin, a black pigment, in the colon. This is associated with laxative abuse, particularly anthracene type cathartics: cascacara, senna, aloe, rhubarb and frangula. Cessation of the laxative results in disappearance of the pigmentation. Lymph follicles and polyps do not take up the pigment.
