Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was a British nurse, humanitarian, and hospital reformer who transformed nursing and wrote the first definitive textbook on the subject. She was director of nursing operations on the front during the Crimean War, where her efforts to improve sanitation in military hospitals drastically reduced the mortality rate.
