TOM COTTRELL. (Joseph) Austen Chamberlain, 1929. Chamberlain, (1863-1937), British statesman, born in Birmingham, was the eldest son of the statesman Joseph Chamberlain and half-brother of Neville Chamberlain, the future prime minister. He entered Parliament as a Conservative in 1892 and among the offices he held were Chancellor of the Exchequer (1903-1905 and 1919-1921), Secretary of State for India (1915-1917) and Lord Privy Seal (1921-1922). He shared the 1925 Nobel Prize for Peace with the US Vice-President Charles G Dawes. Caricature showing Chamberlain standing at the dispatch box and wearing his famous monocle.
