American Institute, New York City (front elevation). Artist: Alexander Jackson Davis (American, New York 1803-1892 West Orange, New Jersey). Designer: Designed by Town & Davis (1829-35 and 1842-43). Dimensions: Sheet: 31 x 25 1/8 in. (78.7 x 63.8 cm). Date: 1834-35. This design for the American Institute follows a scheme that features more often in Davis' designs for public buildings in an urban environment. The facade of this building is most strongly marked by its columns, which, although abstracted, are in the Egyptian style. It is certainly not the only Egyptian revival building Davis designed, but he more commonly applied the style to penitentiaries, cemetery entrances, and monuments.
