Letter from Thomas Cromwell to Henry VIII, 12 June 1540. Cromwell wrote this letter to Henry VIII two days after his arrest for high treason to protest his innocence of any such charges. Writing with ‘the quaking hand and most sorowffull herte of your moste sorowffull subeiect and most humble seruant & prysoner this satyrday at your [Tower] of london’, Cromwell implored: ‘ffor myne offencys to your grace which god knowyth wer neuer malycyous nor willffull and that I neuer thought treson to your highnes your Realme or posteryte so god helpe me ayther in woorde or dede, neuertheles prostrate at your magestes [feet] in what thing soever I have offendyd I appell to your highnes ffor mercye grace & pardon.’ Cromwell’s pleas were ignored and he was beheaded at the Tower on 28 July 1540. .
