FRACTURED ARM

Broken arm. Colored X-ray of displaced fractures of the radius and ulna (lower arm bones) in a 21 year old man. The radius is in the foreground and the smaller ulna is visible behind the radius. The bones of the hand are at lower center. The bone alignment is no longer true & the fractured ends have separated. Most fractures are caused by a sudden injury that exerts more force on the bone than it can withstand. X-rays are used to confirm the diagnosis and to provide an accurate picture of the type of fracture. Bone begins to heal immediately, so it is important that the broken ends are correctly aligned. The bone is then immobilized to allow the broken pieces to unite firmly.
