Imhotep, Ancient Egyptian physician. Limestone relief. Imhotep is shown seated (right) together with surgical instruments (centre) and a birthing chair (left). Imhotep was something of a polymath. As well as being a doctor he was also an architect, high priest, scribe and vizier to Djoser I, the second king of the Third Dynasty of Ancient Egypt.
