King Philip's War, Death of Metacomet,1676

King Philip's War was an armed conflict in 1675-78 between Indian inhabitants of New England and colonists and their Indian allies. Metacomet AKA King Philip wanted to push out the colonists because of conflicts over land use, diminished game, and other tensions. Hunted by a group of rangers led by Captain Benjamin Church, Metacomet was fatally shot by John Alderman, a Wampanoag Indian, on August 12, 1676, in the Misery Swamp, Rhode Island. After his death, his wife and 9 year-old son were captured and sold as slaves in Bermuda. His was mounted on a pike at the entrance to Plymouth, where it remained for more than two decades. His body was cut into quarters and hung in trees. Alderman was given Philip's right hand as a trophy. Published by W. A. Wilde Company, 1904 (cropped and cleaned).
