'The ships of Lord Mulgrave's expedition of discovery embedded in ice in the Polar Regions', 1774. HMS 'Racehorse' and 'Carcass' sailed from the Nore on the sandbank of the Thames Estuary, under the command of Captain Constantine John Phipps to Spitzbergen in the Svalbard archipelago. The 'Carcass' was comanded by Commander Skeffington Lutwidge, with a young Horatio Nelson on board as a midshipman. Watercolour held at the Victoria And Albert Museum.
