Air Chief Marshal Sir Arthur Tedder -- Military history was made when Air Chief Marshal Tedder was appointed Deputy Supreme Commander to General Eisenhower of the Allied Expeditionary Force which invaded Europe. Never before had an airman been appointed to direct a co-ordained force of all three Services. Throughout the fluctuating battles of the African Desert, Tedder evolved new principles of Co-ordinating air power with ground offensives and Tedder's "Carpet" which paved the way for the smashing Allied victory in Tunisia was the forerunner of even greater air support in Europe.
