Meniscus of Water and Mercury

Meniscus of mercury (right) and the meniscus of water (left). Mercury molecules attract one another more strongly than they attract the molecules of the container, so they form a convex meniscus. Water molecules are attracted to the glass container by capillary action, so they form a concave meniscus.
