Vercingetorix surrenders to Julius Caesar, c46 BC, (19th century). Gallic chieftain Vercingetorix (died 46 BC) was defeated and captured by Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) at Alesia (near Dijon in France). Vercingetorix was taken to Rome, where he was humiliated by being paraded as evidence of Rome's greatness, and was then put to death.
