Treaty of Wallingford, Arrival of Henry II and Eleanor,1153

Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine arrive at Winchester, 1153. The Treaty of Wallingford was an agreement reached in the summer of 1153, that effectively ended the civil war known as the Anarchy (1135-54), caused by a dispute between Empress Matilda and her cousin Stephen of Blois over the English crown. Stephen announced the treaty in November at Winchester Cathedral: he recognized Henry as his adopted son and successor, in return for Henry doing homage to him; Stephen promised to listen to Henry's advice, but retained all his royal powers. Cassell's Illustrated History of England, 1865 (cropped and cleaned).
