The most commonly observed salamander in the Iquitos region is the Nauta Mushroom Tongue Salamander (Bolitoglossa altamazonica). The species was described by Cope in 1874 (Oedipus altamazonicus); however, there are at least several salamanders masquerading as this species and it is undoubtedly a species complex across the greater region.
