Jules Verne, "From the Earth to the Moon"

Interior of Columbiad. From the Earth to the Moon is an 1865 novel by Jules Verne. It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, and their attempts to launch 3 people in a projectile to land on the moon. The story is notable in that Verne attempted to do calculations as to the requirements for the cannon and some of his figures are remarkably accurate. The sequel, Around the Moon, deals with what happens to the 3 men in their travel from the Earth to the Moon. It was later combined with From the Earth to the Moon to create A Trip to the Moon and Around It. Illustration by Émile-Antoine Bayard and Alphonse de Neuville, 1872.
